SUNDAY FUNNIES: FALLING FOR JOKES

Hello Everybody! Waxy Dragon here!
The Northern Hemisphere is now experiences Autumn, aka fall.
Now, fall is an interesting time of year. It's like Mother Nature ran out of green crayons and had to use up the other colors in the box before she could get more.
Personally, I love fall. I can fly and dash through the leaves, and being a warm blooded creature, the cold weather doesn't bother me. Winter still bothers me some, but I'll fly south later.
So meanwhile, here are some of my favorite fall jokes.

Why did Humpty Dumpty have a great fall?
To make up for a lousy summer!

What did the tree say to autumn?
Leaf me alone.
And if we're talking about Autumn the puppy, I don't think I can repeat the tree's reply here.

What did one leaf say to the other?
I'm falling for you!

Just think, if money did grow on trees, autumn would be the best season ever!

Autumn is when you drag all your winter clothes out of the closet and see what the moths were up to over the summer.

How come only leaves fall in autumn and prices don't?

Well, Douglas Adams once wrote that flying was just a question of not hitting the ground when you fall, but I guess the leaves never learned that lesson.
In any event, have a great week everybody and please be back here next weekend for more Sunday Funnies!-wd.

TRIVIA TIME
Of what historical significance is the Three Dog Night song Black and White?

The song was originally written by David I. Arkin and Earl Robinson in 1954 to celebrate the decision by the United States Supreme Court in Brown versus The Board of Education that outlawed the racial segregation of public schools. While Pete Seeger and Sammy Davis, Junior; as well as the groups The Maytones and Greyhound all recorded versions before them, it was Three Dog Night's rendition that proved the most successful (to date).

THE SHADOW LEGION: NEW ROADS TO HELL (BOOK REVIEW)

From Airship 27, cover by Mike Fyles
Hello Everybody.
Recently I had the honor of being Ric Croxton's guest co-host on episode 77 of his Ric's Comics podcast.
You can listen to that here, and the topic of discussion was The Shadow Legion: New Roads to Hellby Thomas Deja.
While the podcast was spoiler free, what did I actually think of the book?
Well...

In her final days, a woman makes a desperate bid to survive and becomes a growing menace to innocents and criminals alike. Now the criminal Rose Red, she will obtain her goals and stay alive, no matter how high the body count rises.

In his debut novel, Thomas Deja brings together a diverse quartet of mysterious beings to combat a threat to the city of Nocturne, Florida.

While the Black Talon was already an active character at the start of the novel, his girlfriend reluctantly uses the code name Dream Catcher when in public; because she does not really consider herself a crime fighter. However Night Breaker was just a character on a radio show and the person who becomes The Ferry Man had no heroic aspirations at all when the story begins.

Yet these four people wind up being the only ones who are able to stop Rose Red and restore order in Nocturne, although their adventures are far from over at the end of the first book.

Out of all the characters within the tale, the Ferry Man bears watching, and I felt sorry for poor Isaiah Copper even before the cataclysmic events that dragged him into the battle with Rose Red. The villainess her self was unique not only for the pre-World War Two time period the first adventure is set in, but her initial choice of weapons (her 'thorns') was totally appropriate.

As revealed in the podcast, Deja has long term plans for the characters. While most media today is a combination of both words and pictures, he does an excellent job of not only conveying the action and drama in just straight prose, yet delves into social situations that unfortunately existed back then, but are hopefully better today. Overall, a good and recommended read for people looking for something different with their superheroes, or mystery men and women.

I look forward to future installments and adventures of the Shadow Legion.

DO THE REPUBLICANS EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING?

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EDITORIAL

Since returning for the 2013 Fall session, Congressional Republicans have failed for the FORTY-SECOND! time to repeal the health care program known as Obama Care. That is two more attempts since their summer break, and way too many to begin with!

Meanwhile, some of that "august" group have vowed to not pass a new federal budget, effectively shutting down the United States government come October 1, unless Obama Care is at least defunded, if not outright stricken from the law books. For whatever reason(s), these Republicans are desperate to prevent the Affordable Healthcare Act, aka: Obama Care from going into action, despite the fact that even the United States Supreme Court has upheld the policy!

It is bad enough that many Americans cannot afford health care at the moment, something Obama Care sincerely wants to address. But between Republican muckraking and tinkering, when the law will be allowed to act, let alone whether or not it will be as effective as originally envisioned, remains to be seen.

There are some people who want to see the participating Republicans arrested as terrorists, since they are threatening the well being of this country. Even if this action is legitimate, such extreme measures are a very last resort.

The Free Choice E-zine encourages all its readership to contact their Congressional representatives, especially those actively participating in the above mentioned action, and urge them to do the right thing in regards to this country and their constituents, the people they are supposed to be working for and representing to begin with.

Otherwise, remind them that come the next election, they can always find themselves out of a job.

SUNDAY FUNNIES: AT THE CIRCUS

Clowning around
Hello Everybody! Autumn the Puppy here!
Last week, Waxy Dragon joked about elephants, so this week, let's talk about the rest of the circus.

The circus had a biblical act where a lion laid down with a lamb. Whenever it didn't work out, the circus would just buy a new lamb and not feed the lion that night.

Did you hear that the Rubber Man had to be hospitalized?
He had a blowout.

What did the sword swallower say when he accidentally picked up the clown's foot?
"My, but that tastes flat."

The Human Skeleton wanted a unique disguise for Halloween, so he ate a lot of olives until he looked like a string of beads.

What's all that commotion over by the sideshow tent?
The fire eater ate something that didn't agree with him, so now everyone is in a rush to cure his hiccups!

Did you hear about the retired basketball player who joined the circus?
He's now starring as the world's tallest midget.

When exploring history, BC does NOT stand for Before Circus.

Every circus dreads the giraffes catching a cold. After all, can you imagine the vet trying to stand on a ladder to treat its sore throat?

The school children went on a tour of the circus. Looking at the lions in their cages, they were told that despite their size, the lions were nothing but big pussycats.
"I'm not sure I believe it," replied one student. "Between the wagging tail and the roaring mouth full of teeth, I'm not sure which end to trust."

A man went to apply for a job at the circus, telling the manager he could do bird imitations.
"That's nothing. I already have a lot of people who can do bird noises," replied the manager.
"Oh well," said the man. Then he started flapping his arms and flew off.

But now, before we go, from one of my favorite films, the most appropriate circus song I know.

From the 1939 Marx Brothers movie At the Circus, here's the one and only Groucho singing "Lydia the Tattooed Lady", written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg.
(Video clip courtesy of YouTube, and ALL the Marx Brothers movies are highly recommended!)

So until next week, take care of yourselves, and please come back next time for more Sunday Funnies!-AtP.

Both films were directed by their book's authors. Westworld by Michael Crichton and Sleepless in Seattle by Nora Ephron.

SUNDAY FUNNIES: WHAT IS THAT ELEPHANT DOING HERE?

If I could talk to the animals, I'd probably have nothing to say!
Hello everybody! Waxy Dragon here!
Now there are all kinds of animals in the world, yet (despite its size) one of the most overlooked is the elephant.
So I have searched high and low to present you with this collection of elephant jokes.
And let's leave politics out of it, shall we? The Republican Party is enough of a joke as it is.

Why do elephants refuse to fly?
They can't get their airfare for peanuts.

Elephants can ride trains, but they have to check their trunks in the baggage compartment.

Why do elephants have such big trunks?
Have you ever tried packing all your belongings into just one container before?

How do you walk an elephant?
Tie a rope around the animal and hang on tight when it starts off!

I feel sorry for elephants. They're never offered a seat and always have to stand up. Then again, where could you find a chair big enough for one to sit in?
I know what I am, but who are you?

How do you keep an elephant from charging?
Take away its credit cards!

If people see pink elephants when they get drunk, what do elephants see when they've had too much to drink?

By the way, what IS that elephant doing here?
Anything it wants to!

In Animal Crackers, Groucho Marx said "I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. But how the elephant got into my pajamas I'll never know." I just hope Captain Spaulding did his shooting with a camera!

What does Tarzan say when he spots a herd of elephants in the distance?
"Look! A herd of elephants in the distance!"

What time is it when an elephant sits on your fence?
Time to build a new fence.

And on that note, have a great week everybody and please be back here next weekend for more Sunday Funnies!-wd.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2013... 12 YEARS LATER

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EDITORIAL.

In happier times

Today is September 11, 2013.
The twelfth anniversary of one of the biggest instances of man's inhumanity to man.
The structure known as the World Trade Center in New York City, as well as the Pentagon in Washington D.C.; were attacked twelve years ago today because one group of individuals despised another so much they wished to not only express their anger, but to impose their will upon others if victorious.

View of results, before the towers fell

Many lives were lost that day. All innocent victims.
Some were just going about their daily routines; whether in New York City, Washington D.C.; or on board United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Philadelphia to prevent the terrorists from striking whatever their actual intended target was.
Many other lives were lost in the hours that followed, as the brave men and women of the various emergency services that responded to the assorted distress calls tried to rescue those in danger.

The initial memorial

In the months and years that have followed, life has gone on.
Lost loved ones were and still are mourned.
The debris was cleared.
Those responsible for the madness were pursued, and justice was served.
The rebuilding began.

The newly rebuild One World Trade Center today

Today, a new One World Trade Center is open for business.
But while buildings and other physical/material objects can be replaced in time, lives cannot.
There have been many instances before and since of such cruelty inflicted upon one group of human beings by another simply because of differences in religion, politics, freedoms, and even how individuals prefer to love and live their lives.

SUCH MADNESS MUST STOP!

Hopefully one day, the world and the people upon it will truly know global peace and prosperity.
I just wonder if I might actually see it within my own lifetime?

"Of course, parents started celebrating the moment their children went back," said Waxy, "but we're here now to tell you some great jokes on the subject. Ready?"

"If a man had four horses but only three stalls, what would he do to protect the fourth horse?" asked the teacher.
"Give him to me," replied the girl in the back row. "I've always wanted a pony!"

"Guess what dad?" said his son, trying to put a positive spin on things. "You won't have to buy me new textbooks this year. I'm in the same classes all over again!"

Education, original format (image via Google)
Teacher: "How much would your father have to pay if he owed ten percent of a $500 (US Dollars) bill to the
mechanic and $400 to the electric company?"
Student: "Nothing. He'd skip town first."

If you have a substitute teacher, do the lessons still count?

Mother: "What did you have for lunch at school today?"
Student: "We don't know. The lab tests haven't come back yet."

What is a snake's favorite school subject?
Hiss-story.

Sadly, taking a ladder to school will not help you achieve a higher education.

WAXY: "I don't know."

All you have to do is say whether or not the quote is accurate. Ready?

From the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind:
"We are ready on the dark side of the moon. Play the five notes."

This IS MISQUOTED! The correct line is "If we are ready on the dark side of the moon, play the five tones." While some disagree about the opening, it has always been tones, not notes.

SUNDAY FUNNIES: LABOR DAY WEEKEND ROUND UP

Working to keep you amused, I think
Hello everybody. Your humble Editor-In-Chief Lee Houston, Junior here since both Autumn the Puppy and Waxy Dragon have the weekend off.
The ladies have a running bet between them about how good a substitute I make when they're not here, so let's hope I can pull this off.

It's Labor Day weekend here in the United States and Canada, that time where we are supposed to honor the hard working stiffs who help keep the economy (and the world) running. Of course, the way things have been over at least the last few years, I personally think the joke is more on the employees with the employers and the politicians in their pockets laughing all the way to the bank. But this is the Sunday Funnies, not a political soap box, so let's start off by doing something we haven't done in a long time and actually look at the funnies.

Clip art courtesy of Google
Over the summer we have celebrated (or should have celebrated) the 35th anniversary of Garfield the cat, the comic strip marks this by making June 19 his birthday; and the 50th anniversary of Fred Basset, which began on July 9. Of course, in the comics, both characters are timeless so we can continue to enjoy their antics year after year.

There is one historical Labor Day comic strip anniversary. It was Labor Day 1990 when Blondie Bumstead announced that she planned to enter the work force by opening her own catering business; and plenty of comic strips poke fun at or focus upon the business world like Dilbert, Bottom Liners, The Born Loser, etc.

But this also would not be the Sunday Funnies without some appropriate jokes, to wit:

Luther Burbank, via Wikipedia
Luther Burbank the famous botanist won great fame because of his experiments in developing new plants. But he was often bothered by visitor and sightseers who didn't believe he cold work wonders with plants.
One morning Burbank was out in his garden when a curious passer-by asked, "What are you doing now?"
"I'm trying to cross and eggplant and a milkweed." Burbank said innocently.
"What in the world do you think you'll get from that?"
Custard pie," was Burbank's answer.

A barber tells his customer that his hair needs to be cut badly.
The man replies that the barber cut his hair badly last time. He let it grow out in hopes of getting a good haircut this time.

Is working at a mortuary truly a dead end job?

Do independent sales people take orders from no one?

I have a brother who works in the department store. Yesterday he came home and said he was fired. He made a mistake and took a sign off a blouse counter and put it on the bath tub display. The sign read: "How would you like to see your best girl in one of these for $19.99?"

And on that note, have a great week everybody and I will be so glad when Autumn and Waxy return next weekend to host our annual back to school edition of the Sunday Funnies!-lh,jr
