By now, everyone is out of school for the summer. Even me. I've heard older folks talk about how when they went to school, it started the day after Labor Day, and got out the Friday before what is now Memorial Day.
Of course, there also wasn't as many days off for students and teachers during the school year then as there is now, but with having to make up "snow days" and a minimum amount of time each student has to attend, a school year can now stretch from late August to mid-June in some areas of the world.
So, what does all this have to do with the Sunday Funnies?

BOOK REVIEW: THE SURGEON BY TESS GERRITSEN

Okay folks, I have read a lot more books than I have posted reviews for in the past months, so it's time to do something about the backlog...

As a fan of the Rizzoli and Isles television series on TNT, I became curious of their literary origins, and so checked out the first book in their series from my local public library.

The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen is a complex and intense thriller about a serial killer apparently picking up where he left off after resettling to Boston, especially considering that the only survivor of his previous rampage has relocated there herself.

The book is a real page turner. There were times when I was almost too scared to read any more, yet anxious to find out what happened next. Gerritsen herself has a strong medical background that is well displayed within her writing. I freely admit that there were times when I didn't quite understand all the science, but that did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the novel.

However, while fans of the aforementioned television series might be disappointed that only the Jane Rizzoli character (and some of the supporting cast) is established in this book, they can take heart in the fact that she is accurately portrayed as presented here. It is my understanding that Doctor Maura Isles debuts in The Apprentice, a direct sequel to this novel, which I hope to read and review at a future date.

I do recommend this novel, although I also humbly suggest taking a break and reading something in a different genre to relax and destress with afterwards.

SUNDAY FUNNIES: FOR SALE? (WAXY DRAGON GOES SHOPPING!)

Hello Everybody! Waxy Dragon winging her way to entertain you for a few minutes.

Now, one thing that I find utterly fascinating about people is the ability they have to buy used stuff from each other. This is very practical, and cheap.
After all, why let something that is still good go to waste in some junkyard or landfill when someone else can reuse it?

So let me tell you about my recent shopping trip.

I went to a thrift shop the other day, hoping to find some things to help decorate with my lair with. Didn't buy any clothes. After all, can you imagine a dragon wearing clothes? Maybe a nice hat, or a string of pearls versus a tie, depending upon whether you're a man or a woman, but clothes? How could we flap our wings and fly in such confining things?

SAVE ME!

I did get a nice comfy chair and a few books. Was a bit disappointed that I didn't see any thrifts. Not sure what a thrift is, let alone whether or not I actually want one, but I thought for sure I could at least find out what a thrift was. Oh well, maybe next time.

And before you ask, I know a rummage sale is so named
because that's what you do there: rummage through other people's stuff. I do try to be as neat as possible when I rummage, but I can't help prying into things. A word of advice: if you ever plan to hold a rummage sale, remember to empty ALL the pockets of your old clothing! Some of the things I found there...

I appreciate the spare change and did enjoy blowing up and playing with the balloons I occasionally found in the men's pants. But could someone please explain to me why those balloons have to come in small, square shaped, individual foil packages? Seems like a waste of packing material to me.

Then I went to a yard sale. Was sad to find out that the people holding the sale weren't selling their yard! They wanted to sell the stuff that was on the yard! And that didn't even include the flowers and trees!

What nobody wants to risk

There are a few brown spots in the grass around my place, so I thought a new yard would spruce things up a bit. No such luck.
Oh well...
Maybe next time.

Haven't bothered going to any garage sales, because I'm not in the market for a garage. I don't even own a car! Can you imagine a dragon with a car? It's just like clothes. Why would we want to try to squeeze into something so small, especially when we can fly? I do find it truly amazing how many clowns seem to be able to squeeze into a car when they finally find a parking space at the circus and get out, but that's another story.

And I'm sure you fine folks are already ahead of me and know why I won't go to a flea market either. After all, who wants fleas, new or used?

SUNDAY FUNNIES: PETS AND PEOPLE

Hello Everybody. Autumn the Puppy here, and let's do something we haven't done during a Sunday Funnies installment in quite a while: actually look at the comics!
But while doing so, we'll see how the pets are treated in these June 1, 2014 strips.

We start with a Classic Peanuts installment by the late Charles Schulz. Snoopy is on top of his doghouse sound asleep when it starts raining. He finally manages to wake up Charlie Brown to let him in, and in the last panel, Brown complains about being wide awake and his room smells like a wet dog.

Now, I'm going to assume it was a nice night when Snoopy went to bed, for no responsible pet owner would let a dog sleep out in the rain, and I can't fault Charlie Brown for being asleep when the rain started. As to the rest, why didn't he dry Snoopy off somewhere else?

Meanwhile, the neighborhood kids dressed Farley in some of Elly Patterson's underwear during a classic For Better or For Worse reprint by Lynn Johnston. Farley did keep his cool under pressure, but I could tell he wasn't happy with the situation.

So what is the point of all this?
Folks, fictional or not, animals are living beings too.

We have emotions and needs, and are far more dependent upon others for our care and upkeep; because unlike kids and the elderly, we'll need each other for our entire lives.
With summer coming, make sure your pets are in shade, don't overheat, and have plenty of water.
You take care of us, and we'll give you our love and gratitude for our entire lives.
