THE WEEK IN REVIEW: JULY 20-26, 2014

THIS YEAR IS THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF BURGER KING
AND THE 55TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BARBIE DOLL.

AMONGST EVENTS HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD THIS PAST WEEK...
*The Iraqi Parilament has elected Fuad Masum the country's new President.
*Joko Widodo will be the new President of Indonesia.
*Reuven Rivlin has been sworn in as the new President of Israel.
*Pacific Ocean residents have started recovery operations from Typhoon Rammasun, while concerned about Typhoon Matmo. The latter is believed responsible for the crash of TransAsia Airways Flight 222.
*There has been a confirmed death in Nigeria because of the Ebola Virus.
*Yumen, China might be the site of a new outbreak of bubonic plague.
*Lithuania will officially start using the Euro exclusively January 1, 2015.
*The surviving members of the Monty Python comedy troop have concluded their brief reunion performances, with many fearing this may be the last time the entire company will be together on one stage.
*Pope Francis surprised Vatican employees by eating lunch with them in the employee cafeteria on Friday, and "busing his own tray afterwards". Meanwhile, the Pontiff is taking a strong stand against the Italian Mafia, and is allegedly considering a goodwill tour of the United States in 2015.
*The 2014 Commonwealth Games have begun in Glasgow, Scotland.
*Professional golfer Rory McIlroy has won the 2014 (British) Open Championship.
*Civil unrest continues along the Gaza Strip, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and Syria.

CONCERNING THE UKRAINE AND RUSSIA...
*The bodies from Malaysia Flight 17, which was shot down last weekend, are
reported to have been moved "to an undisclosed location", with few (so far) turned over to outside authorities. Resumed fighting near Donetsk have kept investigators from the crash site, but they have received the plane's flight recorders. Meanwhile, it is feared the weapon system used to shoot down the plane has been shipped back to Russia before it could be examined.
*The European Union has agreed to impose new sanctions against Russia, urging the country to "rein in" the rebels.
*The International Committee of the Red Cross has declared the Ukraine is officially in a civil war, thus making the future prosecution of war criminals possible; including those responsible for the downing of Malaysia Flight 17.
*Arseniy Yatsenyuk has resigned as Ukrainian Prime Minister, worried that their Parliament is more concerned with politics than the country. Volodymyr Hroisman has been appointed acting Prime Minister.
*The United States says it has proof Russia is firing artillery over their border at Ukrainian targets. Meanwhile, the US and the Netherlands will be strengthening their own sanctions against Russia.

WITHIN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...
*Congressional Republicans have voted in favor of going forth with Speaker of the House John Boehner's lawsuit against President Barack Obama. They will be using Federal funds (taxpayer's money) to finance their legal action, although most citizens polled call the action "stupid" and wish Congress would actually do something useful for a change.
*President Obama, on record for saying he "is not going to apologize for trying to do something while they're doing nothing," has been concentrating on actual government business, including declaring "non-refugee children trying to cross the borders into America illegally will be sent back."
*Wikipedia has suspended any changes made to their public information forum originating from Congressional computers after several incidents of "disruptive editing" (vandalism of data). There has been no confirmation as to who has been changing what, only that the computers involved were located in Congressional facilities.
*The State Department has temporarily closed the American Embassy in Tripoli because of the unsettled situation in Libya.

Once again, The Free Choice E-zine would like to thank its fantastic readership for giving us a 3000+ page views month!
