THE WEEK IN REVIEW: FEBRUARY 24-MARCH 2, 2013

Amongst events that have happened around the world this past week...
*The Republican controlled House of Representatives within the United States Congress either couldn't or wouldn't pass a new budget before deadline, forcing President Barack Obama to sign the sequester order initiating automatic budget cuts across the board.
*Benedict XVI has officially stepped down as Pope, although some are now speculating that he did this not because of failing health, but to avoid testifying, let alone possible prosecution, in on going legal action concerning the church covering up priestly "indiscretions". Whatever his reason(s), no replacement has been named yet.
*Fidel's brother Raul Castro has been re-elected President of Cuba. However he has since announced that he will not seek a third term in the 2018 elections. While in office, Castro also hopes to enact term and age limits for ALL Cuban politicians.
*Former United States Surgeon General C. Everett Koop has passed away at age 96.
*Classic Pianist Van Cliburn passed away.
*Civil unrest continues in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, along the Israel/Palestine border, and Syria.

IN ENTERTAINMENT NEWS...
*The worst of Hollywood was "honored" by the 2013 Razzie Awards. Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 won most of the awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress for Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner for Worst Supporting Actor, Mackenzie Foy and Lautner for Worst Screen Couple. The movie also won for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off, or Sequel; Worst Director: Bill Condon, and Worst Ensemble for the entire cast. Rounding out the awards ceremony was That's My Son with Adam Sandler winning Worst Actor and David Caspe received Worst Screenplay, while Rihanna received Worst Supporting Actress for her performance in Battleship.
*The best of Hollywood was honored by the 2013 Oscar Awards. Amongst the winners were Best Actor Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln. Best Actress went to Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook. Argo won Best Picture while Ang Lee won Best Director for Life of Pi. Christopher Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained, while Best Supporting Actress went to Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables.
*Director Stephen Spielberg will chair the 2013 Cannes Film Festival jury.
*Actress Bonnie Franklin (One Day At A Time, numerous stage productions) has lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.
*Actor Dale Robinson (Tales of Wells Fargo, The Iron Horse, Death Valley Days) has lost his battle against lung cancer.

IN SPORTS:
*Jimmie Johnson won the 2013 Daytona 500.
*Spring training and pre-season games are well underway as Major League Baseball warms up for the 2013 season.
*Although some question the contest still being held, the 2013 Iditarod Trail Dog Sleigh Race has begun in Anchorage, Alaska, USA. The 1000 mile course will end in Nome, Alaska.
