*The Supreme Court ruled the George W. Bush administration's "Defense of Marriage Act" unconstitutional. While it is up to the individual states whether or not to allow same gender marriages (striking down California's "Proposition 8" later that day on legal grounds), those within such a marriage cannot be denied the same benefits that a traditional (man/wife) married couple have.*Meanwhile, that same Supreme Court struck down a portion of the Voters' Rights Act of 1965 that protected African Americans and other minorities on the grounds that it was "dated", leaving many pundits fearful of new suppression attempts in the future with the objective of increasing voter turnout for the Republican Party.
*The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Boston Bruins to win the 2013 Stanley Cup in professional hockey.
