While the record has an asterisk next to it because seasons today are longer than in Maris’ time, McGwire later admitted to taking steroids to accomplish this feat but never faced any disciplinary action because the drugs in question were not illegal by MLB Rules at the time. Both Sosa and Bonds have also been suspected of having artificial assistance too, but it has never been conclusively proven.
