AMONGST EVENTS AROUND THE WORLD THIS PAST WEEK...
*Expo 2015 has opened in Milan, Italy. The event will run until the end of October 2015.
*Between the initial earthquake, aftershocks, and the resulting avalanches; the death toll in the Nepal region is already over 7000 lost souls and a million plus homeless. Relief efforts are underway.
*Captain Lee Jun-seok of the MV Sewol has been found guilty on murder charges for his part in the vessel's sinking.
*Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to an as yet unnamed baby girl. This is the second child for her and Prince Georgge.
*The World Health Organization has declared the Americas the first region completely free of rubella.
*The Fitch Agency has lowered Japan's credit rating, due to mounting debts.
*Eliud Kipchoge was the first man to cross the finish line, while Tigist Tufa was the first woman to complete the 2015 London Marathon.
*NASA has intentionally crashed its Messenger probe into Mercury as the final act of an eleven year expedition.
*Scientists have discovered remains of the first winged dinosaur with membranous wings and named it Yi Qi.

IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS...
*Mustafa Akinci is the new President elect of Northern Cyprus.
*President Nursultan Nazarbayev has won re-election in Kazakhstan, although it has been pointed out that there was a serious lack of opposition and restrictive political free speech, since Nazarbayev has always been in an authoritative position since 1984.
*President of Sudan Omar al-Bashir has won re-election.
*Strong protests have been held in Burundi since Pierre Nkurunziza has announced his intent to run for a third term as President.
*Crown Prince Muqrin of Saudi Arabia has been replaced by his nephew.

BETWEEN RUSSIA AND THE UKRAINE...
*The Russian state owned gas company Gazprom has reported an 86% drop in net income. Contributing factors include the sinking value of the ruble, lower oil prices, and the Ukrainian crisis.
*The Russian Central Bank has since lowered its interest rates again.
*Fighting still continues between Ukrainian military forces and the pro-Russian separatists.



TERRIBLE TERRORIST ACTIVITIES...
*Boko Haram is suspected in the recently discovered mass murders of Damasak, Nigeria.
*The Nigerian military rescued over 500 females from Boko Haram possession as they battled the terrorists in the Sambisa Forest. The ladies' identities have yet to be revealed.
PASSING PARADE...
*Actress Jayne Meadows (I've Got A Secret, City Slickers 1 and 2, Undercurrent) has taken her last bow on life's stage.
*Jack Ely of The Kingsmen ("Louie Louie") is no longer with us.
*Child actress Suzanne Crough (Tracy on The Partridge Family) has passed away.
*Singer Ben E. King ("Stand By Me", "A Rose In Spanish Harlem") is no longer with us.
*Author Ruth Rendell (The Inspector Wexford series and other mysteries) has passed away.

WITHIN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...
POLITICALLY...
*While technically an independent, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has announced his intent to become the Democratic nominee for the 2016 Presidential election, putting him in competition with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
*There are some still hoping that Elizabeth Warren will seek the Democratic nomination, but the Massachusetts Senator has yet to make any statement on the matter.
ELSEWHERE...

*Following a week of rioting in Baltimore, Maryland; six police officers have been charged in the death of Freddie Gray.
*Two more women have come forward, accusing comedian Bill Cosby of raping them.
*"American Pharaoh" has won the 2015 Kentucky Derby horse race, the first leg of the annual Triple Crown competition.
