THE WEEK IN REVIEW: OCTOBER 14-20, 2012

The television version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The television cult classic Firefly celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Amongst events that have happened around the world this past week...
*While Malala Yousafzai is recovering from a previous attempt on her life, the Taliban has sworn to complete their objective of executing the teenage female for daring to seek an education!
*Felix Baumgarten has successfully broken the world's human ascent record, breaking the sound barrier after parachuting from a suborbital, helium filled balloon.
*Newsweek magazine has announced it will suspend issuing a print edition and go to a strictly online format only come January 1, 2013.
*Astronomers have confirmed the existence of an Earth size planet in Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our own. What, if any, life may be upon that world is unknown. Pending further observations, the planet has been temporary designated "Alpha Centauri Bb".
*The "Big Tex" statue, representing the mascot of the Texas State Fair, was destroyed in a fire during the final weekend of the 2012 proceedings.
*Entertainer Gary Collins has passed away.
*Civil unrest still continues in Syria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.

IN UNITED STATES POLITICS
*Incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama faced off against Republican hopeful Mitt Romney in the second of three debates earlier this week. While analysts feel President Obama readily won the town hall format session, both NBC News and debate moderator Candy Crowley caught Romney in several mistakes,  if not outright lies.
*According to MSN Now: the Salt Lake City Tribune, deep within the largest American contingent of Mormon followers, has endorsed President Obama, saying that he has earned a second term based upon his decisive leadership, while Romney, a Mormon believer, "does not deserve a first".
*The third and final debate, covering foreign policies, will be held this coming Monday night between the two candidates.

IN SPORTS
*The Detroit Tigers swept the New York Yankees in four straight games to win the 2012 American League Division in Major League Baseball. Who their National League opponent in the World Series will be is undetermined at this time. The Saint Louis Cardinals have a 3-2 game lead over the San Francisco Giants. Game 6 in the best of 7 series will be held Sunday.
*After admitting to taking illegal performance enhancers and being stripped of all his "achievements", former cyclist Lance Armstrong has stepped down from the board of his anti-cancer foundation and is rapidly losing  commercial endorsements.
