THE WEEK IN REVIEW: OCTOBER 6-13, 2012

The Rolling Stones celebrate their 50th anniversary.
This is the 50th anniversary of Ringo Starr joining The Beatles.

Amongst events that have happened around the world this past week:
*The Vice Presidential candidates had their only debate Thursday night on a wide variety of subjects. While this meeting stuck more to format than the first Presidential debate, analysts concur that Democratic incumbent Joe Biden won over Republican hopeful Paul Ryan by being the knowledgeable statesman, citing numerous facts; compared to Ryan quoting Mitt Romney unviable promises and vague plans without stating details.
*The next Presidential debate between Democratic incumbent Barack Obama and Republican hopeful Mitt Romney will actually be held within a "town hall" format this coming Tuesday night, October 16th.
*Hugo Chavez has won a fourth term as President of Venezuela.
*Jerry Sandusky has been sentenced to 30 years minimum in prison following guilty verdicts in the Penn State sex scandal, but Sandusky's defense attorneys plan to attempt appealing the decision.
*Civil unrest continues in Syria and Afghanistan.

THE NOBEL PRIZES
*The European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advancing the causes of peace, reconciliation, democracy, and human rights in Europe.
*Scientists John B. Gurdon (Britain) and Shinya Yamanaka (Japan) won the Nobel Prize for Medicine, by discovering that end stage cells can be reprogrammed.
*Serge Haroche and David Wineland won the Nobel Prize for Physics, based upon their work in the field of quantum optics.
*Scientists Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the inner workings of G Protein-coupled receptors.
*Author Mo Yan of China won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

IN SPORTS:
*It's down to the final four in Major League Baseball as the Detroit Tigers face the New York Yankees for the 2012 American League Division Title, while the Saint Louis Cardinals compete against the San Francisco  Giants for the 2012 National League Division Title. The winner of each best four out of seven series will square off against each other in the 2012 World Series later this month.
