*Incumbent President Bashar al-Assad has claimed victory in the 2014 Syrian election.
*China is reportedly "cracking down on dissidents" for the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
*The Japanese Parliament is finally taking steps to make possessing child pornography illegal.
*The European Central Bank has cut its deposit and interest rates in an attempt to stimulate the Eurozone economy.
*Telangana has officially become the 29th state of India.
*Civil unrest continues in Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Syria.

FROM THE UKRAINE...
*Ukrainian border patrol guards report they successfully repelled an attack on Luhansk.
*Fighting was reported around Slovianisk, with separatists seizing two Ukrainian military bases.
*Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko have issued a joint statement calling for an end to the violence.

WITHIN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...
*The United States government exchanged five Taliban prisoners for the release of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, captured in 2009. However some of Bergdahl's former associates now claim he was trying to defect when captured.
*The Environmental Protection Agency has announced new regulations to reduce carbon emissions 30% by 2030.
*"California Chrome" lost the 2014 Belmont Stakes to "Tonalist", thus failing to complete the Triple Crown of professional horse racing.
*Sunday night, June 8th, will see both the 2014 presentation of The Tony Awards as well as the annual Miss USA competition.
